Drugs
Everyone has a cancer story, but
some are better than others. We
regale him with drunken phone calls.
He is stoned, and it helps, he says
in the same stoned voice he has
always had. It takes the edge off
of the pain and lets him work, though
even the good bootleg heroin won't
help with eye shingles. He doesn't
ever say that he's dying, only that she
isn't speaking to him right now, but I
could talk to her, she might talk to me.
