Before there was thought,
and before there were reasons,
in votive forbearance, my
cousin sits, slack-jawed:

she has that awful downturning
mouth we all so hate and
recognize. We insult one
another from our large noses
and weak chins. The pimpled
adolescent skin is not worth
mention, but we do note her
oddly greasy hair, how really
short she is.

We are all so much taller.
