Short Time
Spending time in Illinois, in Kansas
and Wisconsin, I thought I lost
two hours of my life
with each fading day.
Family would call
from Oregon, say it was
two hours earlier
there—light still played
on the lawn, prime time
just started, the year
was not yet new—and I'd regret
the decision
that moved me away
from the left coast.
I squandered six calendars
in the Midwest, so I figure
my life
has been short-changed
one hundred and seventy-six
days, twenty-five weeks,
six months.
I want that time back.
