as dumb waiters
on country estates
hauling bath water,
maybe calling cards
belonging to printers
publishing broadsides
spreading gossip
to the American colonies
so they could know of
any spaceship landings,
how to lose 10 pounds
in a week without dieting
and see the latest London
rags with pictures of
girls dressed in corsets
and nothing else, getting the
news almost as fast as
colored fliers passed
out on Broadway streets, or
any bright lights, high-rise
canyon town; they wind
up in balls or in metal
trashcans not quite
as full as the ones in
the local P.O. on junk
mail day; they brim with
suggestions on where to buy
apples at 59 cents a pound,
or how to buy one
and get one free.
