An Atheist Prayer
His chest folded in upon itself
and his face sank into the cavity.
He thought how strange it might
be to not think, resigned to not
ever think again and to mean it.
But this is no way to approach
the question: We are all dying;
just as we all have lived. What
we need so horribly is not
God, in fact, but context.
There is no one to save us:
there is no need. We are
what we are & have been,
& won’t be soon enough.
Still, it’s worth crying over.
